Thunderbird Community Centre is the smallest of the Vancouver community centres and is attached to Thunderbird Elementary School. It serves a neighbourhood made up of many low-income families and seniors. Our work is done with many people who are facing challenges in their lives and within an east-side community that is changing, due to rising land values.
The Community Centre Association provides highly subsidized programming, mainly to children, youth and seniors. Because of need, many of our programs have a food component. We operate a licensed preschool and out-of-school care program. Funding for programming comes from the government, program revenue and other partners and donations. Much of the funding is granted because the association is a registered charity under the Canada Income Tax Act. Without the CCA, our community would not have access to a great deal of this funding.
Thunderbird provides a variety of enrichment and activities for our children, and mentoring and team sports for the youth. Our Chinese seniors group is one of the largest in Vancouver, now celebrating 25 years at Thunderbird.
We are an important part of our community – in the day-to-day lives of our neighbours. We help to keep the “community” in community centre.
